For more than one and a half centuries for economy and work in Zell (Mosel)

Wirtschaft Craft and trade in a distinct form have been a tradition in Zell for about two thousand years. As far back as the Roman Age, Zell was an important centre point between the metropoles of Augusta Treverorum (Trier) and Confluentes (Koblenz). Some findings and documents, which can be marvelled at in the city’s museum in the town hall (Rathaus), prove the economic significance of the little town right back in the Roman times. The town’s name “Zell” came from the Roman “Cella” for “cellar”; as Zell was adorned with copious amounts of storage cellars for the wine of the region, which was already valued by the Romans.

And from and around this base product of “wine”, a flourishing economy with all conceivable craft and trade developed. Despite opportunities to expand being limited by the tight valley, Zell gained increasingly in economic significance over the centuries as the centre point of a region, which stretches from up and down the River Mosel and into the neighbouring Hunsrück.

For years the headquarters of the district and local administration and today of the municipality administration as well as the town ordinances and privileges, the central significance of Zell has strengthened and the craft and trade industries have adapted and grown.

The Old Town and surrounding area with its many established companies was and is still today the centre of Zell. Here, numerous specialist shops offer their wide spectrum of goods. The locals can buy everything they need for daily life.

The holiday guest will also find an extensive range of attractive souvenirs for their friends and family back at home. Here, the guest can stroll along, resting on their holiday, look at fashions, watch the glass blower and become a wine connoisseur through copious amounts of wine tasting in the many wine taverns along the way.

Cultivated gastronomy rounds of Zell’s range of offerings designed to make you feel good. Even a longer holiday is hardly long enough to try out all the local pubs of the little town. That is how rich the diverse range of restaurants, bars, cafes and wine taverns is, which stretch as far as the districts of Kaimt and Merl!

Economic significance has also demanded the new district of Barl in the last thirty years. Over the years here, as well as new companies, which moved to Zell from out-of-town, some local companies have also settled here. They exchanged often the tightest of spatial proportions for generous opportunities to expand and develop in the new district. Industrial and production companies, modern craft, the new hospital, wineries and a multitude of specialist shops and service provides have settled here and form a well-rounded potential of efficient economic power together with the Old Town and town districts.
