Wine town Zell (Mosel)

Zell (Mosel) - the wine town of the "Zeller Schwarze Katz"

All about wine in Zell (Mosel)

With a vineyard area of approx. 400 ha and around four million vines, Zell is one of the largest wine-growing communities on the Moselle. The dominant grape variety is Riesling, but numerous other grape varieties are also cultivated, such as Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Kerner or red wine varieties like Pinot Noir and Dornfelder. In the steep vineyards of Zell, the use of machinery is hardly possible - the winegrowers of Zell therefore usually carry out their work laboriously by hand.

In this section you will learn more about the history of the "Zeller Schwarze Katz", get to know basic terms and background information about viticulture and the quality levels under 'Wine Knowledge' and also get an overview of winegrowers' businesses and wine shops in the wine town of Zell (Mosel). You will also find a list of the wine majesties of Zell in previous years.

The "Zeller Schwarze Katz"

If you live or go on holiday in Zell (Mosel), you can't miss her: the "Zeller Schwarze Katz", symbolic figure and mascot of our wine town.

The black cat is omnipresent in Zell. The "Zeller-Schwarze-Katz-Brunnen" is located on the market square, and an oversized cat figure is enthroned on the Zell roundabout. It also adorns many wine labels, shop windows and souvenirs in Zell. Our "Zeller Schwarze Katz" vineyard is not only known throughout Germany, but also worldwide.

The figure of the black cat can be traced back to a story from the 19th century. You can find out more about it on the following page:
